ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE
CONWAY -- Within the next two years, the Warriors may be fighting their last battle on the Hendrix College basketball court.
Rather than abolishing basketball, the Conway college is looking
at
changing the name of its sports teams and the accompanying mascot,
which depicts an American Indian warrior, a plan drawing mixed responses
from students.
"It's just ridiculous," said David Aubin, a sophomore from Rhode Island, who said he doesn't think the mascot demeans Indians. "I think everyone is being too politically correct."
Cody Hopkins, a sophomore from Van Buren, said he thinks Hendrix should retain the team name but change the mascot.
"I can see that it might portray to some people that every Native
American is a warrior," he said.
John Churchill, the college's dean, said the drive to alter the mascot
stems from the belief of some that Hendrix "needs to move away from
an
ethnically identifiable mascot." Some, he said, find the depiction
of an
Indian warrior stereotypical and offensive.
Churchill has been appointed chairman of a committee that will consider
alternative names and mascots. The mascot has been the same for
nearly
70 years.
Groups representing Indians have urged colleges and universities,
including Hendrix, to change their mascot if it involves Indians.
"They're mostly concerned that this usage trivializes their traditions,"
he said.
